Construction Begins on Key China-Mongolia Cross-Border Railway

Updated: May 15, 2025

On May 14, the groundbreaking ceremony for the China-Mongolia Gants Mod–Gashuun Sukhait Railway was held at the Gants Mod Port in Urad Middle Banner, Bayannuur City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

This new railway marks the second cross-border rail link between China and Mongolia since the Ereenhot–Zamyn-Uud Railway was completed in 1956.

As a vital energy cooperation corridor between the two countries, the project aims to significantly enhance bilateral trade in energy and mineral resources. Its supporting infrastructure — the Ganquan Railway — has already entered into operation. Once completed, the new line will connect the Ganquan Railway on the Chinese side with Mongolia’s southbound railway network, further facilitating trade flows, boosting cross-border logistics, upgrading industrial parks and border trade services, and strengthening connectivity between the two nations.

Jointly promoted by both China and Mongolia, the cross-border railway will start at Gants Mod Port in Bayannuur City, pass through the Gashuun Sukhait Port, and connect to the Gashuun Sukhait Station in Mongolia’s Omnogovi aimag. The Chinese section is being developed by China Energy Investment Corporation and is scheduled for completion and operation by 2027. The Mongolian section is being constructed by Tavantolgoi Railway LLC.
