The 4,844-meter bridge is the largest bridge in Malaysia and an important infrastructure project undertaken by China and Malaysia as part of their Belt and Road cooperation. It is located at the estuary of the Lupar River in Sarawak State, with more than 90 percent of the works carried out over water.

The main channel bridge, which has a double-tower, three-span, double-cable-plane concrete cable-stayed structure, closed on January 26.

In the face of extreme tidal ranges, fast-flowing currents and powerful wave surges at the construction site, the team has made full use of existing equipment and employed new techniques to enhance efficiency, cut costs and ensure the safety of the project.

Once completed, the bridge will become crucial infrastructure connecting the coastal regions of Sarawak State, and the ferry will no longer be the only means of crossing the waterway for locals. With higher transport efficiency, the bridge will promote the utilization of oil and gas resources and spur the prosperity of agriculture and tourism, thereby boosting the region´s economic growth and deepening China-Malaysia infrastructure cooperation.
